Frequently asked questions
We help industry-leading teams succeed at scale with the right infrastructure.
- What tools does Alchemy provide for AI coding agents?
Alchemy provides three ways to connect an AI coding agent to blockchain data: a hosted MCP server (168 tools across 100+ chains), a CLI for terminal and scripted workflows, and Agent Skills that teach an assistant Alchemy's API patterns. Together they let an agent query chains, read contracts, and ship onchain apps without you wiring up infrastructure by hand.
- Which AI coding agents work with Alchemy?
Alchemy's MCP server connects natively to Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Claude Desktop, and VS Code Copilot, plus any client that supports the Model Context Protocol over Streamable HTTP. Agent Skills add support for ChatGPT, n8n, Linear, and other tools that follow the open Skills spec. Install once and your assistant calls Alchemy's tools directly in your workflow.
- What's the difference between Alchemy's MCP server, CLI, and Agent Skills?
The MCP server lets an agent call Alchemy's tools live, in conversation, after a one-time OAuth sign-in, with no local install needed. The CLI runs the same operations from a terminal or script, built for automation and account management. Agent Skills are Markdown instructions that teach an assistant Alchemy's API patterns upfront, so it writes correct code on the first try.
- Do I need an API key to use Alchemy's agent tools?
Most developers start with a free API key from the dashboard: the CLI, MCP server, and Skills all work with it. If you're building an autonomous agent that shouldn't hold a static key, install the agentic-gateway Skill instead: it authenticates with an EVM wallet using SIWE and pays per request in USDC through the x402 protocol, so no API key is required.
- How much do Alchemy's agent tools cost?
The CLI, MCP server, and Agent Skills are free to install and use. What costs money is the underlying API usage: Alchemy's free tier covers typical development and testing, then pay-as-you-go pricing applies as request volume grows, with enterprise plans for high-volume or mission-critical workloads. There's no separate fee for agent access itself.
- How many blockchains does Alchemy support?
Alchemy's MCP server and CLI cover 100+ blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Solana, and Starknet, plus their testnets, through one consistent interface. An agent authenticates once and can query data or trigger actions across any of these networks without a separate setup or API for each chain.
- Can I use these tools to build agentic products?
Yes, for your development workflow. However, if your agentic product needs to ping Alchemy APIs in real time, explore our Solutions page where teams like Virtuals use Alchemy APIs for programmable wallets, gasless transactions, and secure onchain execution.
- How do I get started with Alchemy's agent tools?
Install the CLI (npm install -g @alchemy/cli) or connect the hosted MCP server at mcp.alchemy.com/mcp to Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex, then sign in with your Alchemy account. From there, ask your assistant to do something concrete: deploy a token, read a contract, or fund a wallet on a testnet. See the docs or open the dashboard to create a free API key first.
